The first European to explore the Edmonton area was Anthony Henday of the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1754, but it wasn’t until 1795 that a permanent settlement was established. This settlement was called Fort Edmonton, named after an area of London that was home to a prominent member of the Hudson’s Bay Company.

Edmonton was a modest sized town leading up to its incorporation in 1892 and its inauguration as the capital of Alberta when the province was formed in 1905. The population at the time was under nine thousand, however, the region experienced rapid growth in the early nineteenth century.
