Napanee’s first recorded settlements were by the Iroquois in the late seventeenth century, eventually being settled by Loyalists in the late eighteenth century at the site of a waterfall on the Napanee River. Originally known as Clarksville after Robert Clark who build an early mill in the area, Napanee wasn’t incorporated until 1854.
There are several sites dedicated to preserving the rich history of Napanee. Visit the Allan Macpherson House (built in the early nineteenth century) or the County of Lennox and Addington Museum to learn more about Napanee’s past.
