Waterloo has an interesting history, starting all the way back in 1784, when the British government gifted a large portion of the area to the Iroquois alliance as part of the wartime alliance during the American Revolution. Much of the land was sold off over the following years, with ownership eventually falling to some of the earliest settlers of the area, pioneers from Pennsylvania around the beginning of the nineteenth century.
The township was first referred to as Waterloo in 1816 after Waterloo in Belgium, where the famous Battle of Waterloo took place, coinciding with Napoleon’s famous defeat.
